The company that makes TurboCAD also makes a program called TurboViewer:

You could import the drawing into Chief and then export it. This will not give you an exact translation because there are some objects that can't be read in by Chief. The advantage is that you already have this tool available.

Yes Dermot I was kind of aware I could use Chief, but I think its a bit of a long process, especially with a lots of symbols. Ive just got this new 3d file viewer (3D Photo browser light) which works with many file formats.DXF 3Ds, but not DWG, which is why I wanted to convert these files, just so I can see them easily. Wouldn't it be nice if it worked with ALB files, why dont you give them a call.
    Thanks everyone for your input.

Cadopia has a AutoCAD clone that is very close to the "real thing" for $150 and they have a trial version for download.

New FREE and Very Simple DWG/DXF Converter

I've created a new PowerTool for those of you who want a simple, no-frills, and FREE utility to convert from DWG to DXF and from DXF to DWG. You're all invited to enjoy a complimentary copy of our CADcompanion Converter for DWG/DXF.

It's as simple as can be - it doesn't do anything interesting other than to accomplish the file conversion - and can be obtained from:

    http://www.chiefsymbols.com/ccx.html

Simply download the file and install it to your computer; then click on the link listed in Step 3 on the above webpage and fill in your name to obtain an activation code for your free license.

The program is far too simple to require a User Manual, so here are the complete instructions(!):

    1. Use the Directory dropdown box to specify a directory on your hard drive and then, in the File List which shows all the .dwg and .dxf files in that directory, highlight the file you want to convert.

    2. Click on the "Save File" toolbar button, located to the left of the phrase "Save File As", and specify the format in which you want to save the file (either dwg or dxf) and type in a name for the file.

You can specify a default directory to be looking in when the program is opened but that's the only feature other than the actual conversion.

    Enjoy!

Just curious, what would the advantage be to having DXF over DWG? How could that help me, I guess, is my question. Can't I import either one into Chief?

Two reasons, Accutrans file converter-viewer-polygon reducer-layer renamer-etc works with DXF but not with DWG, Secondly I've just discovered 3D photo browser light, which does a wonderful job of displaying the entier contents of a 3d folder in a single window, this works with DXF files, and a few others, but not with DWG s
