    Isometric Plumbing layout

One of our City councils are asking for an Isometric plumbing layout over two stories showing falls of the pipes etc.
Believe it or not I've never had to do one in Chief but I know some of you have.

What is the best way to go about this.

Your help might save me a hours of puddling about.

wow - i've yet to be asked for an isometric riser. currently i do everything on a plan page with a plumbing layoutset...all with CAD lines and text. the same way the plumber would with his colored pencils.

about that thread Lew - those drawing look nice - the issue I think with them is that a riser diagram may give information on how the flow of venting and draining would theoretically run - once in the field - the plumber rarely follows the diagram....even if he did it from the beginning. (in my experience).

    Thanks

Those diagrams seem to be what the building dept's want ?

I would prefer to have a graphical approach, preferably in 3D.

Lew - do you mean the 3D's or Iso's? I have never had a building department ask for anything in 3D or Isometric projections.

All of my plumbing and HVAC are done in 2D with CAD....even more so - they look at the notation more so than the lines themselves...they see noted vent and trap sizes as more important than how/where the lines run throughout the house.

    Agreed Chris,
I tried the plumbing in 3D a while back. The problem is that if you show it in true relationship it gets very cluttered around each major area ie. bathroom, laundry etc. I can draw it in 2D CAD in chief with an isometric look in about one hour or less for a 2000 sq ft house using a template with all the labels and lines etc. ready to place. Templates speed things up.

I meant the ISO for the building dept

    John:

    Samples

    Lew,
Here is a sample of what is considered standard here. We also have to supply Water piping diagram. Piping is oversize due to low water pressure design.

We do it the same way that John does it. 1-line isometric, this is typically how mechanical engineers do it also.

    Hey Rick

I have used the 2D isometric type method to meet the Council requirements in the past, however I believe the requirements now must include positions within the framing to check joist and structural penetrations points etc. You could show this on the floor plans.

I agree with some of the previous posts that colour would be helpful for clarity within the documentation for plumbers etc however dont do this as several of our beloved NZ Councils wont accept coloured drawings as they dont scan well apparently.

Why they dont just accept electronic applications is beyond me?

Might be to efficent for them and they wouldnt have anything to do? LOL

    Good Luck

    Thanks, those will be helpful.

I may include 2D and 3D in the permit sets just to get the building depts thinking moved up into the 21st century
