    Auto Frieze Board

I am having trouble getting all the frieze molding to genertate when using the auto build roof tool. I think I have everything set up right in the dbxs that apply, but not sure. The walls have been checked to generate hip returns with frieze but no gutter on the very front-most gable, full rake on the stepped gable with siding behind it. Frieze generates on the primary gable, but not on the step. Also there are gaps in the frieze on the soffit returns. Any ideas? Dan

I'm almost certain the quoins on the brick walls are the culprit for the frieze gaps. No answers though. Sorry. I haven't used that feature yet.

    Dan,

No sure about the top one, but the bottom ones are missing because of your quoins.
You may have to adjust the quoins so there is no projection at the top, or draw the frieze manually around the quoin.

wow ... nice brick material - is that Chief or something you made?

I too have had problems with auto Frieze working the way I want it to. I have resorted to polyline soilds until I can find the time to figure out why the auto frieze works the way it does.

BTW, why such a small window header over that window?

    Tommy & Glenn,
Come to think of it, I did have the quoins in place prior to building the roof. That may account for it, as you suggest. I did pull the quoins down, so that they do not project above the bottom of the frieze mold, but as you can see, the mold is squared off there. I'll try it after first erasing the quoins.

    Mark,
I'm not sure what you mean by gable flashing. I did draw some roof drip edge, using the 3d polyline. And obviously, the workaround for the missing frieze is the molding poly, but I just thought the frieze mold was supposed to draw on all the gables and eaves automatically, so long as it was specified in the dbx.

    Zoome,
The brick is from the Boral brick site www.boral.com. It's Old Hickory with a shelby mortar. David Potter suggested this site, and the brick sample engine there is great. The small window header is designed to draw attention to an area that might normally be filled with an archtop transom. I see it worked. Thanks everyone for all the help. I'll get after those quoins now. Later. Dan

    Oh well....

So much for that idea. I deleted all the quoins, deleted the roof, rebuilt walls, floors and ceilings. Then rebuilt everything. Still have the gaps. Also, the gaps in the frieze only appear on the auto roof return portions of the walls. They are normal all the way around the rest of the house, with or without the quoins. So now I suspect it has more to do with the auto roof return feature. Dan

As a guess, I would think you have an invisible wall on the first floor below the attic wall of the stepped gable. For some reason, I can't generate frieze mldg for it. If you change it to visible and rebuild, the frieze mldg will show, but of course that's not what you want. The only way I know to fix would be to use the 3d Mldg Tool.

Have had the same problem since V.10.04a. CA will need to fix the problem. Also get unacceptable sloped frieze boards under the rake returns when using the sloped return feature. You have to manually add the frieze in your casefor now.

    Thanks Cliff,
Well, I don't have an invisible wall there, but the railing there could be the problem. I have a railing built with post to beam feature. Perhaps the auto frieze won't apply in that situation even with a roof over designated. Not sure why, because there is plenty of room on the beam reveal to allow frieze application, which is the effect I was going for. Thanks again all for the help. I have worked through everything with m-plines as req'd. Have a great day. Dan

    Cliff,
Perhaps I should clarify, I have room for the frieze to go on the beam under the full rake return under the step gable. I also wanted the frieze going up the gable too. Clear as mud now, right?

I've having all kinds of problems with attic walls. I don't know if it's because of me or the program, but I can only get the frieze mldg to work right on simple gable ends where the main and attic wall are the same. At least you've got it to look right with the mldg polyline. You have a great day too. Thanks
