    ada bathroom

Im designing my first residential ada bathroom. Anyone know of an easy to follow gideliness for such a design. I have the ada codes just looking for something simple to follow. The room has to be as small as possible yet to code.
    thanks

The ADA does not cover private residential bathrooms per se so there is no "code" that applies directly to them ( http://www.ada.gov/q&aeng02.htm ), but you can use the same guidelines as in design for commercial/public facilities.

Here is a good link with a synopsis of some of the clearances, ammenities, etc. that you may want to try and employ in your design.

Go to ..UNIVERSAL-DESIGN.ORG.. That is the place i design for. Talk to Ron.
The bath area is diferent in the home than comm structures. You need a min of a 5'-0" turning circle in the bath an ada toilet so that you can use a transfer seat and you need a min of 5'-0" beside the commode. You need a 5'-0"x 3'-0" roll in pan for the shower and a wall hung sink or a roll under cab. 30 - 32 in in hgt. no sill plates in the door way and a min 3'-0" door way. If a rail system is used then a 9'-0" clg is min. 100 sq ft min and m ba is 125 sq ft All floors need to be on same level including the gar. and front porch and all need to be covered.
There are a few more things needed but this will get you started. Ron is in a wheel chair and is a t-3 quad. and works for 2 foundations and is on the board of directors as well. we design only for the handicapped or universal design people. He also has over 20 years of construction management behind him and that makes him more than qualified. also the 2006 IRC book has some info as well. and yes it can be smaller but it won't benefit the person in the wheel chair if someone else is needed to help them..100 min sq ft is best

    Joel,

One item great for a small bath is a toilet with the tank in the wall.

    Gary,

How the heck did I log onto that? It was on the first page of the forum.
I am confused. (nothing new) Well, the answer is still valid 5 1/2 years later. ;o)
