Best practice to upgrade libraries and stuff
A freind of the owner of my compnay has decided to retire. He has given me his version X2 to use and see if we want to buy it from him. I'm sure we will.
My question is to see how best to import my version 10 stuff. For instance, my wall defs; are they better copy from an old file or manually recreating each?
I know, in hte past with Softplan, there were times when the upgrades added so many new features, it was easier and used the new features better if I created the walls again.
What about libraries? Copy and past or what?James Forsberg

James:
you should be able to import your older wall definitions in to X2
whether they are better or the same ???
for the library use MENU - LIBRARY - CONVER LEGACY
and your .ALB libraries will be converted to .CALIB
I did this for all my libraries that I purchased or collected via Chieftalk etc
plus the libraries that CA had issued for prior versions that were "missing" in X2

how do you import the walls? Do I just open my profile plan from 10 in X2 and save it as the new template?

so, when you import your libraries, they all come in under import? You cant move them to a logical place within chiefs? For instance, my molding profiles, I would have under Chief Libraries under the Millwork folder.

James:
they will import to the Import folder in the Library browser for X2
you can create your own folders in the library browser and then move them there

but they'll still have to be under the import file tree?
So, I'd have CA libraries and Import Libraries. Kinda would like to have my imported ones under the CA library tree to make it easier to find things. Otherwise, I have to remember if a symbol is CA and or mine.James Forsberg

Lew,
Bare with me. I've attached an image of what I want the library tree to be like. Maybe I'm missing something or just asking for too much.James Forsberg

James:
the libraries provided by CA are locked and can't be added to
you have to put your libraries in the "My Libraries" section
if needed you can copy libraries from the CA libraries section and put in into "My Libraries" also and then edit them and move them around etc

importing libraries into X3 from X2
Hey Lew,
Long time no see. Maybe you could give me some advice. I haven't used X3 much, because most of my plans last year were started in X2. I have a ton of library stuff in X2, but only about a third of it imported into X3 when I did the standard library, import. Any ideas?
In my X2 library browser menu, for example, I have user libraries and import. The import library has by far the most dwgs and jpegs and texture files and none of it has imported.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan:
X2 had import and export folders
I think anything in the import folder needed to be in the main library or it wouldn't be migrated during the X3 install
you may want to contact CA's tech support for the best way to get them migrated
you could try moving them into the main X2 library under "My Library" and then export them to a .CALIBZ folder on your hard drive
then use X3 MENU - LIBRARY - IMPORT LIBRARY

Good idea. Thanks, Lew. I was able to place the import folder into the My Library folder, and most of it saved and will open now.
