    Auto Roof Return Went Away

Anyone have some insight why I lost an Auto Roof return on the project shown below? It disappeared when I manipulated the siding material on the Gable walls.
At present I open the wall .DBX and the Auto Roof return is still selected and it is still selected with "Full" chosen. Prior to the Siding material change I did have a roof return running across the wall as it should be. Looked good. Wanted it there to help break up this HUGE gable area.

    Any ideas?

Working my way around the structure I found it gone on the Right Elevation too. Here I've just added the return manually.

Bummer. It takes a lot of time to manually create a roof return. But, I can edit it. Unlike the Auto Return.

    *sigh*

Sometimes this software gives me the creeps.

Have you watched Louis's tutorials on manual roof returns?

It could be you need to add a break in the wall and make sure it is a full gable wall.
    X1 or 10 now?

I have no problem with the manual returns.
Even without viewing Louis's tutorial it makes some sense I'd have to break the wall to get the Auto Return to work in the case of the double rakes in the Front Elevation wall.
The RIght wall however I can only attribute the loss of Auto Return to the siding surface change.

BTW Allen your knowledge of Chief is impressive.

    That did it Allen.

Below is the Left elevation which 'lost' the Auto Roof return when I edited materials. I selected the wall, clicked on Full Gable and voila the roof return came back err returned!

BTW I don't use Auto Roofs. All my roof planes are manually created.

Actually I lie. I did use the Auto Roof build once in 10.8. Hmm, I think I'll post a pic of it.

    Thanks for the compliment.
I learned just about every thing on here.
There is nothing wrong with auto roofs and can be a good start.

Auto dormers is another subject though.
Great if used in the right places..

Here's the only time I've use Auto Roof build.

Unfortunately the home owner drew it in PUnch. Wanted it duplicated. So I did.

My question now and then is - How is that roof going to be vented?

In fact to all my Northeast/Snow area comrades should hip roofs be avoided?

Last training session with a Composite Roof Surface supplier (Asphalt Shingles) he stated and restated the importance of venting the underside of roof. They believe the moisture seeps through the roof sheathing, up into the underside of the shigles, and then 'boils' out of the shingle when the sun strikes them. This is what they claim causes the curling tip syndrome which makes a roof look old old old before their time. About 5 years versus the claimed 35 year life of shingles.

I think I'll pose this question again in a seperate thread. Would be refreshing to discuss design versus Chief for a change.
