how can one change wall colors?

Two ways at least. One is to select the wall, open the dbx, go to Materials tab and change it there. The other way is to use the spraypaint tool, but you have to be very careful using that because you can easily change all the walls in the room or house. Read about that in the manual or test it out. It's a powerful tool but again, needs caution.

doesn't seem to be working in aterials tab...i know i've done this before but i am not remembering correctly

I think you can also select the ROOM and go into the materials tab and change the ceiling color wall color and the floor material
