adding material to the edge of a balcony

I have a 2nd story balcony over a 1st floor garage. When I try to change the material of the 12" edge of the balcony in elevation view, I get an error saying that you cannot do this, but that you should modify the definition of the wall above or below. Does this make sense???

BTW, I'm using CA ver. 10

Your balcony is defined by railings on the second floor...shift select all of the railings in plan view and open the railing dbx. in the materials tab, change the material assigned to the platform edge to what you need it to be...

rebuild floors/ceilings, and then view your 3D.

Apparently that only works if you're using single layered walls (railing).

and a railing is always only a single layer no matter what wall type you assign to it...(?) unless you define it as a solid railing/halfwall.

Chris, the reason I said that is because if you initially draw your walls with lets say a siding4 wall type, and then change those (3) walls to railing> shift/select the walls>open> change platform edge, it doesn't work. For me, it only works if the wall type is a single layered wall. V10.

BTW, unless I'm seeing it wrong, if you take a siding4 wall and make it a railing, it's still a siding4 wall if you open the wall dbx which is not a single layer wall. If you use the railing tool to make the wall, it is using the default single layer wall type.

In fact if you dimension it, you can dimension to the layers.

    Tommy,

You're seeing it right. Most never get this.

Right Tommy - that's what I was getting at....

I will assign a walltype to my railings if I want the attic wall above to be a different material than the default wall material, or when using solid half-walls, and some other applicable reasons......but a railing still acts as a single layer although it's assigned multiple dimensionable layers..

Well Chris, I will still have to disagree with that statement but it's not worth continuing. To change the material of the platform as you describe ONLY works if the railing is a single layered wall. It does not work if the railing walls are "Siding4" walls. A railing wall is not a single layer wall unless you make it be in the wall dbx.. It does look like a single layer wall in plan view but it's not. If the "Siding4" wall is made to a railing wall and then becomes a single layered wall, then you wouldn't be able to dimension to the other layers of the "Siding wall" wall type. on a single layered wall, you can only dimension to one side or the other.
