    Deck post

How do I get the deck post to extend 6" above the railing? In the deck specification dbx I set the newel height to 42" and the railing height 36". When I check in camera view the railing stays on top of the post and pushes the post down under the 36" height of the railing. What am I doing wrong or is there a work-a-round for this problem?

Make sure the box that says "rail passes over newel" is unchecked.

Where is this box in the deck railing specification dbx? I've looked on all tabs and can't find it.

Go to deck room dbx, set ceiling height what you want you newels to be, like 48", then go to deck railing dbx and check "post to ceiling" and take a look to see if it will work. It's a work around, if you have a roof over it you'll have to use a manual newel post insertion. shane

Open the railing wall DBX=uncheck "post to rail"(railing tab)
Then in the Newels/balusters tab,set your Newels 6"higher like you said you did..
In the library there are caps you can add to the top..
Going to see if you can add one and make a symbol .

Yes you can add a cap to a post, add it to the library and use that one on a deck rail..Much easier than adding caps to every post..
Also can use for the stair newel..
Need a cap with a solar light built in...

There are no work arounds needed, there are newels in the library that already contain caps...and the ceiling height...well I just don't know what that has to do with anything?

For stairs, there is a "rail over newel" box, sorry for the misspeak...for deck rails, uncheck the POST TO RAIL box, make the post any height you want, and select any newel, or column, or panel, etc...from the millwork library, no work arounds needed
