Purge unused layers

I did a search of previous posts and didn't find anything that specifically described how to purge unused layers in a plan.
is there such a thing?

Kinda Sorta but too many mystery layers have to remain for some reason. Some can be removed - don't know why - some can't be removed for obvious reasons others can't be removed for not so obvious reasons.

Layer management is quite clumsy and time consuming.

Would like Chief to review and streamline to show only a layer set and add or remove from a layer set.

Any views on good management are very welcome.

having to create a copy with the new name then deleting the old version is lame, lame, lame

As far as I've been able to determine, multiple unused layers can't be "purged" in a single operation - you can only delete layers one by one from the Layer Display Options dbx. CA has several layers that can't be deleted. If it helps, I've attached a pdf that I threw together as a "cheat sheet" for our office - it explains the default layers (X5) that can't be deleted (I can't guarantee it's perfectly accurate - CA can be very confusing).

As an explanation of the pdf, there are some colors used:

Layers highlighted in yellow are not implemented by the current version (X5) of the software. They are available for use, though they cannot be deleted.
Layers highlighted in blue can be deleted, but will be regenerated when particular symbols or objects are created in the drawing.
Layers highlighted in red are default annotation layers.

That would be a great start to layer management.

I would like to see the ability to filter layers based on user criteria myself. Do you really need to delete these layers, or would you rather just not have to see them?

Filtering Layers and Layersets for that matter would be very helpfull IMO. The issue of filtering has come up in the past, CA has made major strides in providing a more efficient application. This however, is still an area that could use some attention since it has a direct bearing on user productivity.

The layer naming standards in the industry allow for the grouping of similar objects which works well with layer filtering. Chief's system does not lend itself to filtering and it is a pain to convert the system layers to conventions that do meet industry standards. I am not all that concerned weather the layer conventions meet AIA stardards as such, but they should accomodate a users ability to use features such as filtering Layer Names and Layersets.

X6 has a filter field where you can type a bit of text to filter layers. Very handy for finding things like label, framing etc. layers.
