Extending porch column to the ground?

I am working on a plan right now and the main floor is 3,5' above ground level. I have been trying different approach to extend the porch column to the ground. Here is a picture of what I am trying to achieve:

Make the column base from a soffit or psolid and simply drag the bottom down to the level you want it. You may have to hold down shift to get the bottom to go past the floor line, but then you will be fine.

Joey's method is what I use. The benefit of the soffit is molding can be added. In your case just add a square handrail and size it to simulate the cap. You can adjust the overhang as well with the horizontal offset.
