Post Replacing your roof? Might as well upgrade

You’ve finally decided it’s time to replace the roof on your home. Now you’ve got to start thinking about features you want your new roof to have. When it comes to choosing the roofing materials for your new roof, you can’t do enough research. There are a lot of aspects you need to think about. One thing’s for sure, if you’re going to spend the time and money having your roof replaced, it might as well be an upgrade. Here are some tips for helping you choose what your next roof will be.

    Think about climate

When it comes to choosing a roofing material, there are a lot to choose from. One thing that could narrow down your options is the weather in the area you live. For instance, if you live in an open, windy area, you’ll probably want to go with a heavier shingle that is nailed down as opposed to a standard asphalt shingle.

If your home is located in a cool damp climate, algae is going to be your roof’s biggest threat. You’ll probably want to consider an algae-resistant shingle. Copper makes of 10% of this shingle and will eat away at algae.

    Think about style

If you are looking for a basic roofing material, then asphalt shingles are always a good choice, they can go with just about any style. If your home has distinctive architecture you may want to look at other roofing materials that complement your home’s style better. Clay or slate tiles, architectural shingles, and wood shakes are some of the other popular roofing materials to choose from.

    Don’t forget the warranty

One aspect in choosing roofing materials that is often overlooked is the warranty. Shingle manufacturers stand behind their product. If installed correctly, your new roof should last for years and years. For each roofing material you’re considering find out what warranty the manufacturer offers. Keep in mind that the shingle isn’t the only material that will be a part of your roof. No matter how good the shingles are, if the contractor uses other low quality components, your roof won’t last as long.

Replace gutters while you’re at it

Just like your roof, your rain gutters can wear out over time. If you’ve had your gutter system for as long as you’ve had your original roof, it may be time to replace that as well. If you live in a climate that receives a lot of rain or snow, you may want to consider a heavier duty rain gutter
    system.
