Video cards are very easy to change out, you just have to make sure you have a big enough power supply to handle the new card. A lot of the new cards require 2 power cords going in.

To all having issues with the screen blacking out with shadows on the ATI / AMD Video Cards (Nvidia cards don't seem to be affected). Chief is aware of the issue and a fix should be available in the next update. The solution until the next update is to leave the enhanced lighting checked and check legacy shadows, this will keep the softer look that the enhanced lighting provides and you can have shadows. You might see a slight slow down in performance of the 3D view depending on your video card but on my computer it seems to be minimal if at all.

On a side note, my "final view with shadows" option is insanely fast! Not that I'm complaining but wow! It used to take about 10 to 15 seconds (sometimes 20 to 30 seconds with larger plans) to smooth out images and add the shadows, now it takes about 1 to 2 seconds. I can actually run my preview settings at about 40% (SES) with shadows on and I get only slight lag. Amazing! How did they do that?

Solution to Problem of Black screen in "final view with shadows"
For others having this problem, thanks to Kirk at CA, the attached settings for "Render" solved my problem with black screen.

Avoid the "Command Flushing = Frequently" and unchecking Use Optimizations settings if possible as they will slow some cards down very significantly, especially NVIDIA cards.
You are better off, if it works, getting a driver update directly from the video card manufacturer. Windows update will often not have the latest drivers.Doug Park

Santa's gift to me - NVIDIA EVGA GEFORCE GTX 660 2GB - as Perry promised, was an easy install, took about 25 minutes. So far, no more black screens when using the default settings for "Final View with Shadows" ...all better!

NVidia GE Force GTX 675m
None of the recommendations work.
Background turns black while rotating view.
Active window turns black with final view AND final view with shadows.
No problem with other 3D views
Changing video card not an option here. Also I am hesitant to upgrade the driver because past experience has shown that to be an ill-advised upgrade. Any help?Rich C. SDSInc
