Been trying a few options but can't get the look I'm after. Something like this.

I think I understand Joe. I created a 6" thick stucco layer for the outside wall with a 6" thick stud wall as the main layer. Inset window inset and adjust layer dims to taste?

    Thanks Bryce,

I have another related question. I'm designing a home in an area that requires the windows to be inset with a stucco return, in some styles as much as 12".

Is there another way to build those walls, other than to double frame every exterior wall?

You can frame your walls with 2x10's, 2x12's, etc.

Yes, but I do not think the stucco returns to the deep set windows. Great question Larry, vid cooking now, not a great solution yet, but there could be if CA would allow us to have two framed layers for a wall type................. come on CA, why can't we have two framed layers..... this is a no brainer and could be huge.

He said build-build not Chief-build. You could frame 2x12 walls and then just have a 2x4 inset nailer flush to the inside side of the 2x12 wall and return the stucco into that. But, I would recommend a sloped sill on the bottom for waterproofing and drainage.

Sorry, do not understand. I do not know what build-build is and I do not know what chief-build is. Bottom line, I think the stucco returns to the MAIN LAYER, so to get the deep inset..... oh blah blah blah, I did a vid on it....... if you have it figured out, great, I do not. I am not sure how to put a 2x4 inset nailer flush to the side of 2x12 wall and return the stucco into that.

Sorry for any confusion I really want to learn about building the model in Chief and building inset windows in the field as I'll have to create details for the latter if Chief can't get it right.

Thanks for the vid Scott. I think it finally sunk in here as well. I didn't think the thickened material could be anything - thought it would have to be stucco to work but apparently not. Would indeed be amazing to see two framed walls in the scenario you illustrated.

I did indeed ask about actual field building the walls as well and the reason I asked was I see a LOT of these inset windows in the development I'm working in, and as I mentioned, they are actually required. Since I work so closely with my builder (who hasn't built here yet) I was wondering if anyone here had any options up their sleeves that I/we might be missing.

That's okay, Chief doesn't either. Fortunately people that frame houses do.

There is a YouTube video done by an Austin Texas builder (Risinger Homes) that shows the detailing of the stucco in an inset window.
