Open the Wall Dialog box of the wall you want to change.
Go to the "Materials Tab" of that wall dialog.
Change the "Exterior Material" to whatever you want.
You can also just change the wall type to match using the Wall Specification Dialog of walls.
This can also be set before hand in Edit - Default Settings - Materials - Exterior Wall, so that they will then match

Thanks David. The problem is that changing the material either using the materials tab or by using a new wall type with desired siding, also changes the side wall of the gable. The gable walls should all be green clapboards. The main house walls should all be brown vertical siding. Chief is treating the dormer gable and the 1st floor wall under the gable roof as one wall with the same wall type.

In other words, I want the walls below and above the small strip of roof on the gable end to be different materials. Chief is treating these two wall portions as one and forcing them to be the same material.

Turn off auto attic walls and it will stick. You might also want to make the 1st floor wall " Balloon thru ceiling" then it wont try to create the gable end attic wall.

You can add a node and shape that wall any way you want and that's what I usually do though I KNOW there's a more elegant way to do it.

Worked on that for a bit. Even built a second and third floor to try and separate those walls but got nuthin'. Shaping the wall(s) does work for the visual and may be your only option.

Thanks, Larry. What do you mean by a node?

Manipulating wall shapes (like this better than covering wall with thin slab of desired siding) worked except for hints of brown siding at corners (cornerboards fix that). I encountered the siding problem while building a model of attached, multi-story, brick townhouses. They have different ridge heights and some have dormers with clapboard siding. So some of the gable ends of the main buildings and dormers align and are visible in 3D overviews. For this project I am only working on the visual, so Larry's fix works. I wonder if there is a "proper" chief solution.

Here's a plan. Very curious as to how this works.

Here is the plan file. I don't recall hearing the term node before in Chief. Thanks for offering to clarify.

This is a great series, thank you Gayle for the question.
The reason I say this is a great series is because I was able to accomplish what Gayle wanted 3 or 4 different ways. Including being selective with what level walls were placed on, to using balloon walls, to using pony walls etc. And I as able to do this without using the nodes. The walls were auto built using defaulted top and bottom heights.D. Scott Hall (The Bridge Troll)
