Adjust height of newels on staircase landing

Anybody can help me understand why I can't have different newel heights for a staircase? The problem is that I would like the newels at the bottom of the stairs to be 42" high while those on the landing remain at 36". It seems like there is only one height for the whole staircase.
    Can someone help me please?

I would turn off (set tp 1/16" width) the newel posts and then set them manually from the Library Browser if I wanted direct control of them.
