Am I missing something? Where are patio doors in Chief 5?

I tried that but it seemed to insert an interior sliding door...i.e. without a sill...at least in the brick wall I was using...

Chief 5? I hope you mean X5. Chief 5 was actually called Chief 97.
Chief X5 has two types of sliding doors, interior and exterior. These will look different depending on how your door defaults are setup.
Also, there is only one sliding door tool. You will get an interior sliding door if you click on an interior wall and an exterior sliding door if you click on an exterior wall.
Your walls are either interior or exterior depending on your room definitions, not on the type of wall you draw.Kilgore Trout

On the outside wall, do you have an enclosed space (covered patio)?
