Terrain Isn't Hidden When Converting to Railing Walls

I know I have run into this before but never really zeroed in on what the issue is. Trying to do an open carport as in the second image. I start out with solid walls and the terrain hides like it should, but convert to railings and the terrain is not longer hidden. Why? No change to the room definition. I know I can do a terrain hole, but it just shouldn't work this way. Am I missing something?

How about a terrain feature, the size of the carport, and set the elevation to whatever you need

Terrain features don't influence the terrain. You don't set an elevation for them. Are you talking about an elevation region? I think the terrain hole actually works better because it doesn't influence the terrain. I am just curious why the change to railings negates the hidden terrain. Maybe it's just a bug. It just gets annoying because with each movement of these exterior walls, I keep having to go back and re-size the terrain hole.

Yes, your right, I use a lot of terrain elevation regions to get what I need in most cases. I guess the terrain hole is your best bet.
