Data Librarys
Hi All,
Has anyone out there had experience with using data saved to
a network rather than a local drive?
This way everybody in the office library's would sync ect?
Has anyone tried this? Has there been any issues?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies. Maybe if tell you how I've done it you guys can say ya or na.
In the office we have several users of chief. Each computer has its own licence of chief on it & chief installed.
As far as I know chief as a program runs out of C:\Program Files\Chief Architect\Chief Architect Premier X5 (64 bit), however the
library, tool bars, templates & textures ect are stored in C:\Users\User\Documents\Chief Architect Premier X5 Data.
What I have done is moved my Chief Architect Premier X5 Data folder on to our server rather than in my documents, I have then
created a new Windows library called Chief Lib which has my ''Chief Architect Premier X5 Data'' folder in it & Syncs off the server. ( this is also available off line so you don't have to be on the server to use it)
The final step to tie it all together was to re-path My data folder in my preferences to the new location. Chief Lib\Chief Architect Premier X5 Data
I have done this & it is working fine on 3 computers however
I am just wondering if anyone has done anything similar previously? & did it cause any issues?
Our company revolves around our library's. This way everyone is working off the same one & if someone adds or updates the Lib
everyone gets it instantly.
Any help / suggestions positive or negative would be greatly appreciated.

Try searching the software's Help for "network".
In the Help for the Folders panel in Preferences says it is best to use a location on your local hard drive if redirecting the Data folder.
Also, in the Backing Up Files section . . .
It is always a good idea to create backup copies of all your important files on your computer. It is strongly recommended, however, that you never save directly:
• Across a network, such as onto a server;
• Onto removable media such as a USB thumb drive, CD, or DVD;
• Across the Internet.
And in the Opening/Importing files section . . .
Never open a file located on a server or other computer on a network, or on a removable storage device. Copy such files to your local machine’s hard drive first, and then open the copy.
So, as far as the software is concerned, I'd say it's a really bad idea.Chief Architect Premier X5

Chief has never recommended using networks for library but I think that is more because they wanted to avoid carrying the can for things going wrong with users who did not know what they were doing. I ran a system for 5 years with 6 work stations all reading off a central library on the server without a single problem. As long as it is set up properly and everyone is aware of the protocols it works fine.
We kept the job files on the server as well but copied them over to the workstation for daily work then moved them back at the end of the day. With todays fast networks and SSD drives I am sure you could do everything from the server provided you use the file lock option.Gordon Martinsen

Gordon,
Thanks for the message. I thought it seemed to work fine. We also have all of our job files saved on a server but we also use windows library & sync center,
this way all of the jobs are also saved on the computer in case the server goes down.

Note: CA may chose to deny tech support for scenarios that don't meet their recommendations
for ver 9.5 and 10 I installed chief to an external drive and it worked fine
but each time I called tech support they blamed the issue on my using an external drive
with X1 I surrendered and installed chief where CA wanted it to go
I have been using external drives since 1988 but CA didn't want to hear it
