Join roof plane is the most amazing bit of programming I've ever seen. I used to do this by graphical construction, geometry, and trigonometry, and whenever I use this tool I am in awe of it's simplicity and effectiveness. I don't think anyone does this better than Chief.

Glenn:
I did try to use it the other day on a simple gable
my partner had a small gable over my rear entry
I was playing with putting a gable roof over half my patio to block the sun (and rain)
16' x 16'
I copied the left roof plane of the existing small gable and dragged it to the patio area
put it in place and then extended it out 16' from the house
looked good
then I copied the right roof plane and placed it over the patio
since I liked the positioning of the left roof plane I selected it then the join roof plane
then the right roof plane
Chief refused to join them - giving a warning
at that point I would want chief to join them anyways
just make the two match and join them
so I did some "fussing" and got them sorta joined
and tomorrow I will send this "draft" to my partner for him to fix
I don't attempt many manual roof edits but each time I have
I can't remember an istance where I have been able to get the "join planes" tool to work
I'm sure it works fine if "everything" is set first
but that is the point I don't want to do all those settings
I just want them to join - Chief should adjust as needed to "make it so"
so yes, I am too lazy and frustrated to learn how to hop thru chief's requirements
to use the "join planes" tool
I usually just "fuss" with the move handles until I get it "close"
for illustration purpose and then let my partner do his "magic"

I am sure chief's join plane tool works fine and wonderful as designed
and for the designed purpose
it just doesn't meet the purpose I need....

Lew,
Whilst your partner may be able to perform magic, Chief can't.
If it is geometrically impossible for 2 roof planes to join, Chief will give you an error message.
At that stage there is no point in saying "just join them" because it ain't going to happen if the geometry precludes the joining.
Once again, Chief can't perform magic!
I am pretty sure that if it is geometrically possible for 2 roof planes to join, Chief will join them.
Out of interest why don't you post an example of what you were trying to do.
It might show you that even though you have 2 roof planes, in some situations there is no way they are ever going to join because of the geometry.Glenn

Glenn:
if I get time I will clone my plan and start the scenario over again
but my point is I don't care about the geometry
adjust plane B so it will match plane B

Excuse me while I go and bang my head against a brick wall......
Ah....., that feels better.Glenn

Perhaps if the join tool could provide some useful information as to why the join could not be made it. The information could aid the user in determine what changes need to be made to the plane to get it to join.
I almost always can get roof planes to do what I want but every now and then it take me awhile to figure out why a join doesn't work.Regards, Frederick C. Wilt (Began with v9, now using X6 aka v16)
