Gambrel Roof = Vigorous Hair Pulling
Please take a look at the back of the house, larger gable/gambrel roof - left side. I cannot for the life of me get to two to connect. Joined or not is irrelevant.... it the pointy fascia that keeps popping up that is the issue. I have begun to think that the "join roofs" tool was designed by an evil programmer so that is only works when your head is tilted at 5.25D.

Can not check your plan, but have experienced it. Try this, drop lower roof own 12" and then see if they will join. Just see if there s magic spot that roofs don't join.

Mark:
I agree....
If I select roof plane A and select the join planes tool then chief should join the planes
If chief detects a situation then maybe pop a warning
but give me the choice to "join anyways"
If I get one plane as needed then in most cases I want the other plane to match
so just do it !!!

Make the Ridge/Top height - 132 15/16" to join planes property. This is the same height as the opposite roof plane.
this is what I would want the "join planes" tool to do

Thanks for all of the feedback. I finally gave up, shot a rendering and fixed in PS. Yea Chief!
The other problem with the Join Roof tool is that it is not consistent with what roof edge is moved. Which on a simple gable roof - no big deal, on a Gambrel - with six (3 each side) roof planes that need to have the same TOF and TOR elevations. the gambrel I have now looks a wee bit wonky.Mark Henson

Hi,
Glad you got done what you needed to get done.
And I really hate to say this sort of thing but your roof planes are sort of a mess when it comes to "fit and finish".
For example (and this may not be a good example) on the end of the house which has the balcony your main roof pitch is 7 in 12 and some of that roof plane extends out over the balcony. Yet the other small plane the covers the balcony and meets up with the main roof plane has a pitch of 8 in 12.
I don't think you intended to have this asymmetry but perhaps you did.
To get roof planes to fit together nice and tight you need to really pay attention to all the little details and make sure all of the edges, pitches, etc are where/what they need to be.
And I think it is always a good idea to include what version of CA you did the plan in.Regards, Frederick C. Wilt (Began with v9, now using X6 aka v16)

Good catch Fredrick ! and I agree, the devil is in the details. Clients moved our meeting UP one week....So speed was key !

There has been so many times that my problems amounted to a small data entry issue... I feel your pain.

Lew,
I thought your partner did all your roofs because you can't do them.
I have never had Chief fail to join 2 roofs that COULD be joined.
If they can't be joined, Chief will tell you.
No point in telling Chief to "join anyways" if it is physically possible to join the 2 roof because of the geometry.
Perhaps you could post an example of the problem you describe.
In fact, I challenge you to post an example.Last edited by Glenn Woodward; 07-17-2013 at 05:04 PM.

Glenn:
the point is I don't care about the geometry
I like roof plane A and I want roof plane B to match it
just like the stairs have the "make reach" feature
I would like the "join planes" to just make them join
this is precisely why I avoid doing manual roofs and let my partner do them
I hate all that tugging and pushing and pulling
a tweak here and a tweak there
I just don't have the patience for it
so yes, I suppose if the stars and the moon are all aligned properly
then maybe chief can do its thing and join the planes
I'm sure there are many situations where the join planes tool works just fine
I just don't have the patience to find them
I'd rather pay my partner to do them

Lew,
The point is that I don't think it is fair for you to criticize a tool when you don't even understand how it works and you don't use.
The fault is with the operator, not the tool.Glenn
