Newb using X5, Questions about Setting Floors
Just started playing with this. In a nutshell I just want to design a general floor plan for a house and run it by some architects I know to see if it's structurally sound. I'm not really looking to gain anything from this but I'm having fun and getting frustrated with a few things. Ideally it's a 2 story house with a full basement. Everything I find says the basement is Floor 0, and it only let me do that once, and I'm not even sure how I did it. Right now the basement is Floor 1 if that's valid.
I've got some stairs set up, ideally one set leading to floor 2, the other leading to the basement. I can't find any buttons or settings that the stairs go up or down, so they both lead to floor 2, and when I did the copy/paste/hold position, the 2nd floor stairs lead right out of the roof. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong here? Additionally, in this program, what's he difference between a stair, and a stairwell? The 3D views made the stairwell seem like an empty hand rail.

Stairs go from the floor that you draw them on to the level above. The stairwell cuts a hole in the level above. You can place the basement on level "0" but most put it on level 1.

not sure about the "most" part
I think it is a choice between two schools of thought
there are pro's and con's for both methods

Let's have a vote. Do you put the finished basement on level "0" or level 1.

William:
for most of my plans we combined foundation and basement on floor 0
you should create a new thread with a poll

level 1 for me. I really always want a separate foundation plan.

If I placed the finish basement on level"0" how can I show an overview of just the concrete portion of a pony wall.

William:
some scenarios call for floor 0 for basements others for floor 1
It's a choice - not an absolute

Lew,
Do you know of any downsides to placing the basement on level 1?.William Page Architects A.I.A.

William:
there are pro's and con's to both methods
comes down to preference and situation
there have been many threads on this since I joined in 2005 with ver 9.5
for almost all of our projects we put foundation and basement on floor 0
I don't remember the various pro's and con's
we just kinda go with floor 0 and switch to floor 1 only if needed or the client request it
