One of the biggest glitches I run into is in regards to layersets not updating to layout. If you are in plan and hide a layer, then go to layout and see it still displayed, then open the layouts layer display dbx for the layout box (this is at the bottom of your screen) (not the one on top for the layout page) hit ok to close it the layout will correct. Every time I do that I want to drop kick someones head. (in a cartoonish sort of way).

I'm surprised so many people don't like "make copy of active layerset". I love it. I can turn layers on and off all I want for any given layout view without affecting anything else anywhere else. The fact there's zillions of layersets doesn't seem to affect me in the slightest. I just access any given view through the layout and when in plan just return to my default or all-on set set whenever in doubt or before sending a new view to layout. Just my thoughts.

Susan - can I ask how you edit your plans through layout? Is there a way to open layout without opening CA first? I thought layout files are created FROM CA files.

    Johnny,

I can't speak for Susan, but "editing plans through layout" is done by opening CA, opening the layout file, and then double clicking on the appropriate view in layout. It will automatically open that view in the plan along with the active layerset for that view.

    just to re-state

it may work fine now but many versions ago it created a horror show

not sure when it was "fixed" but I just learned to avoid it

But, Now it's fixed. Stop living the past! Give up your dongles and get onto the 'cloud' for the ultimate computer experience (per Cisco)!.

Just jiving you man, I don't use 'make copy' any more either, mainly due to the fact while working on my own house plans with constant 'wife' revisions, I had about fifty extra layer sets, not 'zillions' but enough to be somewhat confusing.

I think Allen has the best idea with the proper setup of a template plan...

For me, every drawing typically going to layout will have it own annotation set. The layerset is just a component of that anno set. Typical drawings going to layout:
    Site Plan
    Floor Plans
    Roof Plan
    Reflected Ceiling Plan
    Elevations
    Details
    Landscape Plan
    Framing Plans
    Camera Views
    Electrical Plan
Existing Plans (but those are just in a different file from the remodel file)

If I have another type of drawing that is going to layout it will have a unique Annotation set with a unique Layerset. I can set up a new Annotation set in about 2-3 minutes and this workflow will save a lot more than 2-3 minutes through the rest of the project.

If you ask me, Alan's method is the best method.
