Question about "Make copy of active layerset"

I understand how "Make copy of active layerset" is beneficial when sending a plan to layout since it allows me to make a change to a view on layout without affecting the original layerset, however, can anyone tell me what the downside is if I choose not to make a copy and uncheck this box when sending views to layout?
    Thanks,
    Susan

You may get confused with all the additional laysets. I do not check that option.

I edit plans by entering them through the layout, but we are now taking on other people in our office and one of them does not like to use the "make copy of active layer set" option. It has never been an issue for me, but I thought I'd try to figure out the pros and cons before deciding to uncheck the box.

    Susan:

    I also avoid "make copy"

it may be ok now to go back to the plan from the layerset
but back in ver 10 it caused nightmares

    I haven't used it since

I ALWAYS go from plan to layout

    Lew,
What problems did you run into by editing your plan through the layout? I've done it this way since I started with X3 and never had a problem - yet...
    Thanks,

    Susan:

the issues may have been solved by X3 ???

bascially, I had a client who had back surgery and needed help finisihing a plan set
he had "zillions" layersets with numbers for names

not being familiar with the duplications, I would make a change via one layerset
only to find out that the fix wasn't showing on other pages
or I would get old and new showing etc

I finally determined that by going back to the plan from the layout and then do a save
    only saves for THAT layerset

I learned to only make changes in the plan and then send the changes to layout
    hopefully the view is live

I don't use it, why, too many layout files. It just creates confusion

Uncheck "Make Copy of Active Layer Set" when you send something to layout and open the views from Layout, and you won't have that problem. Although I can't guarantee that the confusion is coming from this.

Think of "Make Copy of Active Layer Set" like the autopilot mechanism, on a Boeing 777, coming in to SFO... I like to make my layersets explicitly and I know what I am looking for when I need to adjust something (like air speed).

Already do that, I think I was trying to say I don't use it.

Thanks everyone for the info. I have decided to uncheck the box and no longer "make copy of active layer set". Having a more complete understanding of how it works has cleared up a few mysteries of how things are saved in CA.

    Susan:

when I encounter a plan with "make copy..." and 'zillions" of layesets
I create the desired layersets (or use Chief's default layersets)

I then open from the layout each undesired layerset and link back to the plan
then I set it to the desired layerset and immediately close the plan, then repeat for the next

tedious but doable to "clean-up" the plan/layout

    My .02 on this.
It is better to have a template plan set up first with your layer sets already set up and named.
But if you don't, making a copy and naming it right away so you know what views they are for will work.
For someone that doesn't do a lot of plans, it might not be worth taking the time to set up templates..

Sorry, thought you were responding to Lew's post just prior, rather than the OP.

Just so everyone is aware, you can access the layersets in the layout, from the plan using the layer icon at the bottom
