To elaborate: entire view port is solid gray. Tried creating new layout but no luck...problem must be within the existing plan. Any ideas?

Luara,
This appears to be based on your background color settings. Go to Edit>Preferences>Appearance> Colors, then change the background color to "white". Now when you send to layout the building will read against a white background. Also, your layout boxes are overlapping so that is why the bottom of the building is hidden. You can adjust the layout boxes once in layout to resize / crop them.alan lehman - Lehman Design Studio - Carmel, CA
