    New workstation specs for x15

Well its time to upgrade again. This time I'm going to need more rendering speed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx

Personally, I would buy a gaming system and call it a day....

The last few systems I had built cost me 2x as much as what I could buy - there are tons of hidden costs.

Rendering speed is the video card. Raytrace uses the CPU. There are a lot of previous threads on this. I would just get the best video card and CPU you can afford, also lots of memory. 64 bit for sure, everything is going there. Windows 8 is doing very good for me, all my programs run fantastic on it.

Perry - are you sure on the video card = rendering? What I saw from Intel was that the processor was 99% of rendering speed which is why you can render real time over the web using a render cloud.

Chief says the video card does all the rendering using openGL

I think it does all the rendering when you are seeing any of the "common" display types - but when its rendered to a picture using Raytrace....that is processor power. I'm nearly positive on that based on my research - but I'd love to be set straight otherwise.

Rendering and Raytrace are two totally separate things, right? (when it comes to Chief)

What's your budget and what's your workflow? This should be your starting point. For $1700-to-3K you can get a very capable PC for creating 2D drawings, and Chief camera views (OpenGL). For 20K you get a mid-level workstation capable of timely Raytrace and limited motion graphics.

If you're in the US all software and computer hardware is a Section 179 (at least for 2013), or 1-to-1`actual cost business deduction. (Talk to your tax pro, as I am not). So again, what's your budget, what's your workflow, and how much more revenue can you generate with "Big Iron" vs. a PC.

This may be too much power - but this is what I bought (and I bought the monitor):

You want a good machine, look at Perry's specs, he has probably one of the best.

With that budget, no displays or input devices, I would recommend:

    Boxx Technologies 4150 XTREME Series
    http://www.boxxtech.com/Products/3dboxx-4150-xtreme

    Components:

Intel i7 Quad Core Enhanced Performance Processor 4.3 Ghz
    16GB DDR3-1600 (2 DIMMS)
    Nvidia GeForce® GTX Titan 6GB
    240GB SSD SATA 6Gb/s
    20X Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer
Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Edition 64-Bit
BOXX Premium Support 1 Year (Years 2 and 3 Standard) - US and Canada Only 1
BOXX 3 year limited warranty FREE

    System Total:
    $4,463.00

Once you consider HDD storage drives, keyboard, and mouse/3D input you'll be right @ your budget <> $100.

When I bought it a few years ago it was just under 3,000, and I have added 2 video cards since, but my CPU is a bit lacking today and I will sometime soon get a new one. I try to buy one that will serve me in the future and one that I can switch out components on.
