    Corbel foundations

I've been looking in the SSA video and help library systems for information on how to corbel a crawl foundation. Client is asking for a Accessible home (you might call it an ADA design) and I need to drop the joists to make this happen. Anyone know where they hide that video or written directions on how to do this?

Think of it like a step. Top step bears the weight of the walls - usually 5 to 6 inches wide for a 2x6 wall. Bottom step bears the weight of the joists, which is usually 3 to 4 inches. Bottom plates on both levels. The plywood for the joists runs under the wall. We do this in earthquake prone areas where we design "ADA" homes with a crawl space. if you need an image...and I hate doing it....: http://splash.softplansplsh.org/memb...ticle_74.shtml .

That's great Lew, a seven year old thread. Don't you think there is a better method? Unbelievable, same old crap.

Unbelievable, I really hate to burden the inquisitors with extra work so I or someone else can answer their question. Why don't you heed Lew's advice a review the 6 year old thread which in my opinion is essentially useless.

    talk to CA
that is the method they use in video 317

looks like a corbel foundation is different than a sunken ledger foundation

I discovered quickly that terminology can be a problem. A sunken ledger is a traditional foundation that has a PT 2x8 (10 or 12) anchored to the wall using 5/8 anchor bolts 12" O.C.. This is used in areas of low earthquake risk but here on Vancouver Island we have 3 fault lines converging. It's like LA but I don't even notice quakes anymore unless they are 4.0 or better. Anyway, I need the detail and will watch the video. This is a standard foundation for the intended use so I need to come up with a solution.

I know that Lew, but don't you think half their videos are essentially nonsense. Love the program, but this stuff they post are essentially "tricks", that they have worked out to show how user friendly this program is. Just refer to some of the Emily Black videos, she presents a video, but if you try to reproduce what she has done, .............. well let's just say that 75% of the time she leaves out some important steps.............. and then there is little acknowledgement from CA that some steps were left out. What is the problem with little or no acknowledgement? A noobie gets frustrated. I have done several follow up videos on some of the stuff she has done, and 75% of the time I cannot recreate what she has done, fortunately I know a little about the program and I can figure out the steps she has left out.

But go ahead and use video 317, if you ask me, there is a much better method.

Yep, go ahead and watch CA's video, and then watch my video on sunken ledgers, then decide which one is more user friendly.

Ca's video may be lacking in many cases

but so are your's in many cases

truth be told - I have a very hard time following your videos
by the end I can't remember what works and what doesn't

    CA's videos have issues too

thus, I reference what is out there and let the users decide
    what works and what doesn't

    I have been requesting /advocating since 2005
that the steps in video 317 be automated via a setting in the build foundation dbx

another solution would be in we could have full access to the API to run a script
    to perform those steps

    I consider video 317 to be a "work-around"
