A good topic for an Emily Black Video
How to use framing reference markers and their limitations. Especially for roof framing.

Just put one where you want the framing to start from and it frames from that point, not sure if 1st and 2nd floor must have a different marker or not. I really only use them for trusses.

I seem to recall there is a "Move to framing reference" command somewhere. Also, the framing reference must be located on the first floor?

Scott:
I'm guessing that you figured this out by now. Roof framing reference behaves pretty much as described in Help. But they left a few things out.
Only selected rafters can be moved. Also, one being that if you group select (select box) rafters, the "move to" icon doesn't show up. meaning you can only move and group select them one by one with the shift key, which defeats the purpose of the move.
Also the rafter(s) may move left/right or stay the same depending if how it is first positioned relative to the marker. IOW- the first rafter won't necessarily move to the maker.
IOW - it's easier to delete and rebuild.- Auto roof framing doesn't seem to do anything with respect other than give a lot of warnings.
A video would be helpful to point out the limitations and the resulting frustrations. IOW - don't forget to place a marker and check reference in build or you may be starting over.Gerry

Okay GT, did video on YOUTUBE. Looked into limitations. First, no separate framing ref for walls and roofs, all in one, limiting. Second, in vid, I could not control the rafters meeting at a point on hips and valleys, depending on roof config, sometimes they would not meet, not good.
I have never used framing ref before, not really a need unless I want to get anal. But if I want to be anal, it does not work very well auto.D. Scott Hall (The Bridge Troll)

d dot,
This would explain that behaviour:
Framing Reference Markers are useful when framing a gable roof, but not necessarily a hip roof. When a Framing Reference is used, common rafters on either side of a hip rafter do not meet in the same place.
If the Framing Reference is not used, the automatic framing utility starts common rafter spacing from each end of the horizontal ridges, which results in common rafters on either side of hip jacks meeting each other.Glenn

Framing reference is useful if you want to do stacked framing - i.e. studs-joists-roof all align. This is a common feature of Advanced Framing approaches.
