    locking exterior wall dimensions

I am having trouble with walls moving. Is there a way in x5 to lock them, i was reading some threads from 2008 where people seemed to be begging for this feature.
I would appreciate any tips on how others deal with this in case they haven't fixed the problem.

You can place any wall on a new layer called "Walls,Locked" and lock it. If you want to lock all walls then lock the layer "Walls, Normal"

    Wiliam:

that layer will lock the walls so the user can't move them

but Chief will move them if it is given a task to do that requires it
Chief will do the move without warning

I have been an advocate for years that we should receive a warning first

    Lew,
I just read other threads on locked walls moving. Seems that it is rare. Are these exterior or interior walls or both.
Can you reproduce the situations where walls move , I have not seen this happen.

    William:

    exterior or interior

    you can reproduce it

just create house with exterior and interior walls

then move a wall any wall

chief will move that wall as instructed and it may move other walls

thus causing an effect on rooms and areas that you considered to be "done" maybe even "perfect"

I would like a warning that a locked down area is about to be changed

I hate being focused on a task and later discovering that there was a "ripple" effect
to an area that I didn't want changed

    the law of "unintended consequences"

in earlier versions when room definition was lost chief would revert back to the defaults
this caused all kinds of havoc on areas that were considered "done"

for the most part Chief fixed this issue with version X3 or X4...

for the most part it happens all the time and "everyone" has come to accept it as the "norm"

I would prefer to be warned that my "perfect" area is about to be changed

I hear you about the warning.
I can not get a "Locked wall" to move. What tools, objects or actions cause a Locked wall to move.

    Lew,
Your first line does not explain how it happens.
When I move a wall I don't think I have ever had another wall move.
Can you please explain the circumstances in more detail.

As for the second line, it doesn't happen all the time and I don't believe "everyone" has accepted it as the "norm".

    Glenn/William:

I have given up tryin to justify the need for locks

I only respond to threads where someone else runs into the issue

I post a reply to let them know that some consider it an issue and some don't

there are many, many threads on this topic since I first started posting about it back in 2005

find the threads and read up on it

if CA ever decides to implement locks
it should be a preference setting for those who want to see the warnings

if the issue doesn't bother you then you can leave the setting off

I have found walls moving when doing polygon rooms and then joining onto a "normal" wall. eg creating a turret with specific wall lengths (say 1500mm per wall) then joining to another wall. So the adjacent wall to the turret wall may snap and I end up with the turret wall at 1497mm (or whatever) But hey, I'm so out of date anything could happen .

I know the old lock wall argument has been around for some time I definitely believe this area needs a lot of work to represent corner junctions correctly. Although an occasional annoyance I have generally been able to find a work around - until today.
The attached images show an exterior corner with a retaining wall butting up to it. The house walls and retaining wall are different construction, different thickness and on different layers (Walls normal and walls retaining). I have locked walls normal but when I drag the retaining wall to the corner it insists on merging with the house wall and creating one continuous wall.

OK I found a fix. I drew a thin invisible wall across the end of the retaining wall and dragged that up to the house. I still had to be careful when adjusting the length of the invisible wall to stop it reverting to one long wall.
Interesting that there are still those who say Chief will never move a wall on its own accord. I thought if a layer was locked it was locked - but what do I know?

I thought if a layer was locked it was locked - but what do I know?

    Gordon:

it is locked - for you

    but never for chief

chief gets to do what it wants - when it wants

    with no warning

so always keep a sharp eye out

it can be like a David Copperfield illusion

you think everything is where you put it - but ....

I've had this same problem and couldn't find a resolution - I'll give your invisible wall a try. However, I don't consider this a "fix" - it won't be a fix until Chief codes the software to allow true locking of a wall's position, dimensions, and joining behaviors.
