Open X4 files in X5
Will I be able to open my X4 plans if I upgrade to the X5? Will I have to make a new plan template once I upgrade?

You can open from earlier versions but once you save them, the old version will not open X5 files..
They suggest making a new template but it is notnecessaryy.
Mostly to update new default features..........

a newer version of Chief can open/edit older plans
older versions of chief can't open newer plans
you can keep multiple versions of chief running on the same PC
and even have them running at the same time

I can open old plans with X5. The resulting X5 plan, though, once saved, can't be added to the X5 plans database. It can't be opened by the old version, either, but I have no desire to mess with older versions of Chief Architect for the time being.

can't be added to the X5 plans database
Note:
while this is an issue for Jason - very few Chiefers use a plans database
