    Ubuntu

    Hi,
Has anybody ever tried (and succeed?)to run chief X4 in ubuntu or similar linux based os? I'm thinking of ditching MS (never liked win7 and absolutely hate win8!) + the fact that ubuntu is free and comes with all the software you ever want for free (except CAD like software like Chief)

Ummmm, I sorta think you will be missing lots of other software also

go to a software store or online vendor and start checking the boxes
I suspect you will see many of them don't list Linux

    I started buying computers/software in 1978
the general rule is to buy the desired software then buy the computer it will run on

I have been following every thread on this forum since 2004
and I don't think anyone is running Chief on Linux

you could contact CA's tech support after the holiday
but I suspect they won't support it

bottom line - if your computer is capable of playing some of the high-end PC games
then it may/should be able to run Chief

I agree. Maybe there is an add-on software that would make Windows more tolerable?

i thought about trying chief within linux with virtuabox, but that is as far as i got.

linux does have most of the software you need/want for free. it is only some specialised programs that only support windows

Why would you say that? You would have nothing to loose but time if it does not work! Or did you try it and had a disaster and just warning others? Either way, I would like to hear more from you.
Can believe it's been a year since I posted that! As it happen, I was going to try it, but did not! - I got side tracked and then forgot about it! - but I still intend on trying it some day.

    Cheers
