Roof style opions please.

Hi,
I have a ranch house that I would like to have a covered front porch. At the moment there's no porch there. I had a contractor suggest a flat roof in the area outlined. The house is in a pretty nice neighborhood and I'm not sure the flat roof would look " appropriate" I was thinking of having a slight pitched roof (1:12) or a L shaped pergola. Not sure of the scope or complexities involved. I would love to hear anybody's opinions on this.

I would use a full roof over the porch with columns and beam. Same pitch as the house with no ceiling for a little height.

1:12 is considered a "flat roof"

most shingles warranties require at least 2:12 - 4: 12 is recommended

many jurisdictions require 4:12 for shingles

Thanks. I agree, but having to reframe the existing roof I will imagine be out of my budget.

What about a privacy wall in the landscape, and a foliage-covered pergola, wrapping the whole corner? There is no pretty way to roof that given the adjacent roof structure.

Either of those two: overbuild a roof or use a pergola.

But a simple 4:12 or similar hip roof over the porch area would probably look OK if there were appropriate beams and columns under it. A porch of half the pitch of the main roof and using a similar gable pattern (or lack thereof) was fairly common in ranch houses and farm houses years ago.

Here's a visual of what Jason said. I used 8:12 for the principal roof and 4:12 for the over-patio planes. The half-ratio always works well, visually.

Attachment 56887First off, thanks to all. It's beginning to look like I have something here. The issue I have is that the 2 ends of the "L" are different sizes. One is 6' the other 8' Not sure what the best answer to that is. Apart from that it's looking good. Ignore the pergola at the side. It's just parked there.

Here's the home with the pergola. It needs a bit of tweeking, lowering it to the eaves maybe. But I thing it fits in pretty good. Love to hear any comments.

Thanks. It's actually not over the front entry. I think both look acceptable. I was concern about the reduced daylight coming into the home with the low sloped roof.
