    Room area

I have a townhouse configuration and Im trying to figure out what the individual units square footages are. Since they overlap its not very easy to figure this out. I was guessing the only way to go about this is using the text specification box and insert living area and add it all up. Does anyone have any quicker easier ways then this?

Second part of my question is Im looking for square footage of the plans, so what insert option is best: internal room area, living area or standard room area? Does anyone know the main differences in these choices?

    Thanks in advance!

    Chad:

    not sure of the differences

I have been requesting that CA put all of these values into a "spreadsheet" format so that we can export to Excel
and then choose the values we need

Chief does allow us to specify in the room dbx if that room is to be included
this helps but having all values in a "spreadsheet" would be better

Chief knows the values - why not give them all to us ???
then we could easily review the differences between: internal room area, living area or standard room area

the volume of each room would also be helpful

for a project we might be working for a homeowner or builder or realtor or appraiser or ...

they all have different requirements for what to include in "living area" or sqft etc

I use rectangular polyline then shape it around my plan, open its DBX and get the area. I do them on their own layer and fill them with different color for each type (Garage, Parch, etc)

I use the room finish schedule, using the standard type configuration, it also adds them up for you automatically and you can include or exclude any room from the list. There is some setup in the defaults but once you set it up once, your ready to go. You can also set it up just for square footages and no room finish if thats what you want. Keep it on the active floor plan and it will change as you add rooms. live.

These settings "Standard and interior displays" are defined in the Reference Manual, no point in my reciting them from memory when you can look them up and read for yourself, this is not arcane knowledge.

Im wondering if doing the polyline solid method would be counting square feet that is actually not being used, ie: space used up by walls etc?

I use the polyline method for that reason, i.e. to include the area taken by walls. For county or builder calculations they need gross areas.

The room finish schedule using the standard method also does a good job, it didn't used to back a while ago, but does now.

    Ash,

Thanks for the other calculation idea. Perry, how does the standard method work better now? What version did you notice that this worked better? It appears to work the same way, how does it seem different for you?

Chief gives good counts for floor area and it is per the assessor and appraiser standard, which means it is calculated to the outside building lines, and staircases are only counted once. Thus, a rectangular house 30 x 40 feet, two stories, with a 6 x 12 (72 sf) staircase, would read 1200 sf main floor, and (1200 - 72) 1128 sf on the second.

The material list calcs do room area to the inside faces of framing and ignore finish (drywall, etc.) thickness. For whatever else is needed, there are the excellent CAD and measurement tools.

If you want the individual room net areas - create a room polyline. The net area will be shown in the Polyline' dbx.
