OpenBIM is based upon exchange of data from app to app, but general BIM is more a general description than "standard" (per se). So you know, exporting from Chief in 3d does work very well - and the objects retain med range data. If I export a model into 3DS I dont have to go re-associate every line.

I'd call CA a BIM. I believe it is 5D in that you can edit in several views, including basic informational data, and have that edit reflect across the spectrum of the model (ie windows, doors, moldings etc).

Using a well-known BIM like Vectorworks, I can tell you CA has more interconnectivity in my opinion.

    Chief's BIM is "stand-alone" BIM

Chief doesn't even use the IFC

there is little inter-operability among other AEC BIM apps

Chief is not 5D - not even close

"Poor software interoperability has long been regarded as an obstacle to industry efficiency in general and to BIM adoption in particular" (quote by US National Institute of Standards and Technology)

BIM is not a "sharing" or "standard" based function. BIM operation within a application can be completely proprietary as I understand it. That is why you have the outside trying to get apps to use IFC and go to OpenBIM.

I am surprised you don't think CA is 5D. One example of 5D is when you are in a 2D elevation and you modify the placement of a window and it changes the floor plan, cross section etc. Or you change a door size in an info box and it modifies floor plans/elevations etc etc. - and then linking to costs and take-offs, or engergy calcs. I guess this could be improved by CA adding more spreadsheet options so scheduling could be included, but not many CAD apps that boast BIM deal with scheduling beyond simple spreadsheets.

I'd love to know what you think of as 5D..?

I take it back - CA isn't 5D, but as I read more about this many of the 5D apps don't really meet 5D specs. I guess I would call it more 4D, but in some ways many apps simply call their spreadsheet intergration 5d.

ADDED: I was writing this as you posted your other comments, so I will respond once i read.

I thought in the demo videos CA had an energy analysis component (keep in mind I am new to CA). I remember seeing a diagram that showed the entire US and temperatures etc - maybe that was a different software.

Also, I thought Chief had more spread sheet capabilities - it doesn’t. Vectorworks has a spreadsheet built into the app that you can place cell data in any "object" and then run calcs based upon any pre-built or custom formula. When I saw CA’s schedules I mistakenly thought there was more to it – I guess that is just a lined grid not a spreadsheet.

OK, I stand corrected on CA - its not close to 5D.
I’ll say adding a spreadsheet to CA seems easy, and then it really opens up so many possibilities with schedules etc. If that’s what it takes to add a “1D”, should be a no-brainer. I’ve attached a spreadsheet export of 2D details we used with Vectorworks as an example of something we used it for. We could attach this as a reference to callouts and it added the details we needed on that project. We could also make quick changes to the cells. This was one of a million uses – as it was limitless to have spreadsheet integration.

I am sure CA can do something similar, but keep in mind this is data from a spreadsheet in Vectorworks.
