Scott, The 3D ambient defaults are designed to affect precisely the Render views (and RT's when checked). Check it out with a simple render and adjust the slider(s). Huge effect. Again that's what they are there for!

The sun people!!!! Any one can screw with the materials, your still in a shadow, then when you go to sunlight everything will be off or too bright.

Sun angle had no effect on what we were trying to accomplish - which of course was nothing that the OP was trying to accomplish but these are dangerous waters whenever you post here.

BTW I hardly ever do it this way!! I un-check the box and deal with my lighting in the RT dbx. I'm just showing the effect of the 3D dbx (when checked) on RayTraces.

It definitely looks better, what's you talking about and did you adjust the hight of the sun . your post just proves it

Larry the way you do it takes away any realistic lighting--no shadows- not good.

The first 3 screen shots show changes in both the height and angle of the sun with no change in the shadow color/depth - am I not communicating that clearly?

The last one changes the ambient lighting value.

The point I was trying to make (and again probably badly) was that changing the sun height angle does not effect the depth/color of the shadow - only its position (on my system). I think those first 3 pics show that?

The last one that looks much better because I changed a LIGHTING value not the sun height/angle - at least this is the way its working on my system.

You don't understand, the last one ***** for an RT. By adjusting the materials you are taking away the shadows, you might as well just use a rendering. Shadows are adjusted in the RT dbx. The best RT's have contrast and need them to work from an artistic point of view. None of the one's you show are any good

    Perry,

I'm not trying to get a good RayTrace with realistic shadows, I'm trying to illustrate a point. Your point that changing the sun solves the issues we were addressing - in this case i don't think it does. Again not trying to advise on good RT settings, just showing how it works on my system.

Ok, even in renderings The sun also makes a big difference. Remember you are using XP and an old video card and that could also have be some play here. But I just don't get your problem, I guess.

Sheesh Perry, Is this one of those days you just feel like arguing? I've had those days before.

None of the posts I've posted are meant to show good RayTracing practices nor are they meant to advise on what someone should do to get a good RT. I'm only posting to show how I get rid of those dark shadows. And I didn't adjust materials and those crappy RT's are meant to be crappy to illustrate a point not show some super RT skills that we both know I don not have.

Anyway I hope that helps someone out there.

Oh I forgot - You're right - Sometimes that important no matter what
