    Hello All
max 2009, doesn't really matter which version when it comes to editable polys, they are the same. I did nothing in the material editor.
The version of max makes all the difference. The problem lies in the way Max 2011 handles its textures. I used Max 7 to create the model and apply textures and it worked perfectly. I don't know enough about Max 2011's material editor to ascertain whether it could be setup the same as previous versions.

    Regards

    Phil

I still maintain that they are all the same.

Hmm well I maintain that they are different at least by default. As I said Max 2011 may be able to be setup the same as previous versions but I can assure you they are different by default.

I created a model in Max 2011 and it had texture issues in Chief. Created the same model in version 7 using EXACTLY the same modelling and texture mapping methods and the model showed up with textures perfectly. The ONLY difference is the "Material Editor". It is vastly different from previous versions especially versions 9 and prior.
As further proof I loaded the mesh created in 7 into 2011 and with out making any changes to it I exported it from 2011 and again it worked in Chief so there is no difference in the way Max 2011 exports as 3ds. I also installed 2010 and it had the same problem.

Now I hate to be blunt and while you have indeed attempted to help you obviously do not know as much as you think you do. Using Unwrap UVW worked perfectly with version 7. The mesh was already an "Editable Mesh". There never was anything wrong with the mesh other than the size which turned out to be a simple units setting however the textures and mapping were an issue. You admit you have version 9 of max that is three versions older than the current which is I believe 2012. I have had version 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9 2010, and 2011 and I can tell you there are vast differences between 9 and 2011 especially in the material editor. Most of these changes occurred after Autodesk purchased Discreet.

Anyway I don't want to sound ungrateful but the facts point to differences.

    Regards

    Phil

Wow! I can say about that statement to you but I did not. It's obvious.

    I'm not using version 9 but 2009.

There is a big difference between unwrap UVW and UVW map...unwrap has very limited parameters.
