I only use jpeg for my website.

Chief's jpeg is quite pixelated esp when editing renderings in PS, I save BMP and then convert to jpeg.

This is only happening in Chief, Max's jpeg output is good enough for me and my clients.

Chief must have their jpeg setting to something like 75. CA needs to allow this to be set by the user.

Have you tried saving to .png and then converting to jpeg? It should be just as good, or better.

    I would like to.

I usually save Max renderings in PNG for the transparency and later for PS editing. Chief's PNG does not have that transparency.

So, Chief's image file compiler outputs low quaility jpegs, and no alpha channel pngs?

The downside is obvious. I wonder why CA chooses to compromise on the output of their ray trace image files?

That doesn't make any sense at all! Why would they do that? Very disappointing.

Actually we can set the pixels.

I just found out that Chief's default setting is 72, Chief allows us to adjust this in the Ray Trace Wizard > Units.

    50 passes AO set to 1.0 max 1h 7m 23s saved as a png.

Took a long time for the shadows on the hallway door to look decent and the rafters have a strange light around them.

    Done for now

The jpeg quality setting is different than the pixels per inch. You can have a 300 px/inch image that is low quality, and you can have a 72px/inch image that is high quality (for screen use).

A high quality jpeg cannot be made from a low quality jpeg. It must start out high.

I think it is the "generated sky" that is causing that. Try to use a regular backdrop.
