    CA and Golf Courses

I've recently provided a product to a customer where the individual was impressed enough to offer me more work. He essentially wants me to build him a golf course in 3D for fly bys down the hole from the tee to the cup.

Has anyone done this in Chief or some reasonable facsimile? I've played around with it in Chief and found the terrain contours easy to manage but the materials and textures for the grass and trees and mountains (tried desperately for a "mowed" look) did not provide a product I'd like to attach my name to.

Does someone have a suggestion for software that provides a product of a golf course as nice as Chief does buildings?

....or do I just need more practice on terrains in Chief???? I really haven't done much other than very basic terrain.

Don't have a clue, but it seems to me Chief would not be able to handle an entire golf course with buildings and all , lots of trees, landscaping. I would think the file would be vary large. 32 bit has a 2 gig max. 64 bit is better. It might be just too slow , if Chief could even handle it.

I would create the terrain in a "master" plan

then create each building etc in separate plan and make them symbols to place in the "master"

The average Golf is about 150 acres, you are probably right...

Agree, CA might not be the program to use.

Hmmm, I think it might be able to

I did a real quick test plan with a terrain perimeter of 5280' x 5280'
which is a square mile = 640 acres

I dropped a stream and a road and some terrain features on it

My PC is from 2008 with 4 GB of ram - 64 bit

the only anamoly I see is that when rotating it around the upper left corner tends to warp out of view

I wish I had more time and better terrain skills
but I think Chief can handle this - maybe ???

Chief is quite capable of doing the modeling. But your concerns are valid. I have done a few holes near my building before. I use an older machine and would have to break this sort of project up into workable bits, merge, and render in Thea. You would probably need some custom grass textures.

Lew, I tried to open your GOLF COURSE FILE, and I could not open it. Am I doing something wrong? Did you close the file before you zipped it. Was anybody else able to open the file? This is so frustrating, I wish I knew what I was doing wrong.

Terrain by itself-no problem, but load it up with plants and buildings on every square inch--no way. Clubhouses can be average,30,000 s.f., and very detailed. then wait until you add trees, maybe 10,000 of them--no way

ok, I fixed the zip file

thought I had closed chief - half asleep today
female puppy ripped two of her teeth out this morning
luckily they are baby teeth so her adults should come in

    Perry:

I agree that doing "everything" in one plan would probably not work

do the clubhouse in a separate plan and then make it a symbol to place in the "master"

it may even be necessary to have a "master" for each hole or every few holes ???

    then have an "overview" master

I started to do this for my ancestor's tourist elevator at the Niagara Whirlpool
as river top to river bottom is 300'+ and there was a Gorge rail line at the bottom and a street car line at the top
plus buildings at the bottom and the top

I just did some prelims for "proof of concept" and plan to get started this winter after I finish moving into my new house and getting some renovations done

I seriously doubt a project like this could be done in a single plan but in a combination of plans - maybe ???

I'm acutally not trying to build a building at all at this point....except for a snack shed I can stop in to take a break....

I built a hole with terrain, water features, even a mountain. The terrain was a piece of cake....what is very difficult to do is get a texture to the grass for a mowed look. No reflections off the water either for the "walk through". The 2D plants have a white background most noticable against the water background.

I tried every single grass in the library, tried building some in sketchup, and also importing some others....and if I didn't go far enough I even tried a green plaid linen out of desperation.

    The sand traps look awesome!

What I'm looking for is a program that can do the equivalent or better than the example found at this web site:

    http://www.theranchgolf.com/golf/hole-flyover

    Again, any thoughts,

    Ivan
