Preview and Final View with Shadows Looks the Same?

New Sager Computer.


In Preferences: everything is on in Final View Options. Triangle Size 24, software smoothing 80.

In Preferences, Preview Options I have all shadows off.

I seem to get the same weak to non-existent shadows in both preview and final view.

My video card seems to be recognized and in good health.

I have placed lights on one side of the room to give me a shadow, but that's not helping.

Any info would be helpful.

Show us how they are the same please or show us how they are different.

The only way they could be the "same" is that you set them the same in your Preferences and you would know if you had done that. A sager laptop is a precision piece of equipment and if chief is properly set (by you) you can and will see a difference between "preview" and "Final View with Shadows", (they can be manually set the same but are not set that way by default, out of the box).

Hi David,
Thank you for your reply, I zipped 2 images with the settings dbx open in each. One is final view with shadow and the other is Final View.

I get the same barely visible shadow in both views whether Final View Options Shadows is checked or not. There is no difference.

I have played around with different combinations and there is no difference. I must be missing something.

Zoe,

I do not see any light sources to create any shadows. The entire point of ray-tracing (or at least a large reason) is to get nice sun shadows, showing in the interior, open GL renders like you did, can be made to show shadows inside and out by careful placing of light sources and adjusting materials.

None of this appears to have been done in your examples (me thinks you expected too much from too little, in terms of what YOU do as opposed to what the software does on its "own")

Perhaps it's me I can't tell. If possible, can someone send me a jpg of what render with shadows is supposed to look like? I get some shadows, but the same shadow I get when all shadows dbx are unchecked.

Here's what I get 'Final View With Shadows'



You can turn off ALL the light sources except the sun in this dbx and you should get shadows. Select the default sun and then select 'adjust' to change the angle etc. of the sun.

I have added as many as 30 lights on one side of the room with no major difference in shadow intensity. I guess I have unrealistic expectations of what shadows are supposed to look like in Render with a normal amount of light. So how many more lights do I need for more shadow intensity? Is there some adjustment for shadow intensity for the lights that are there? Most programs have this capability.

I was going for some shadows on the inside of the house, but I see from your examples that I'm probably expecting more from render than what it does. Considering how long render takes compared to sketchup we certainly don't get a lot in return. If only Chief and Bonzai 3D could combine forces. Chief's comprehensive plan and layout abilities in a boolian program language...I can't wait for the future.

I was able to get more interior shadows by adjusting the lights but can't remember exactly what I did. I've attached the file for you to explore if it will help.
