deck railing with balusters over rim

Is there a way in the railing dbx to get the sort of overlap shown in the image?

    Thanks,
    Alan

I do not think so, that is where the MOLDING RAILING OPTION comes into play.

Thanks Scott, I will watch that later. I banged it out with slabs and the multi copy.

That is how I currently do that sort of thing as well (usually slabs as opposed to soffits, no big deal either way, what works, works). It is currently a limitation of existing railing tools that would be nice to see added as options to the existing dialog.

I think its quicker to use Scott's method because once set up, you can just copy/ paste for all the railings you want based on the length of the line. Simple

Quicker way is to make floor structure zero, increase height of balusters and newels then lower floor(C) to a negative height... add floor.

Getting back to topic, I have done this type of railing several times for it's fairly common in Galveston for beach houses. I've always done it completely manual with slabs which really doesn't take that long to do.

I just use a Molding PLine with a 3D box shape molding for the balusters and a second molding shape for the railing. Only takes a minute or two.

Then add another Molding & you have a bench.

    Alan,

    Back on topic....

This is easy to do with railings.
Build you deck to the correct size and make the railing Invisible.

Draw another rail outside the deck and configure it how you want (no shoe, etc) and make it No Room Def.
In elevation, select the rail and uncheck railing to make it a plain wall (you need to do this because you can't drag the bottom of the wall down if it is a rail).
Drag the bottom of the rail down past the deck.
    Make it a rail again.
The beauty of making it from a rail is that it is easy to modify balusters, newels, spacings, heights, handrail, etc.

One can also add stairs, doors with this method.

    Glenn,
isn't there a "deck without railing" wall type available in X-4, I checked it out once and it's basically a modified 1-layer invisible wall with the outside line designated as dashed. Not a true one line deck tool.

Nice creative work-a-round, I like it.

Quick question, how do you control the newels at the corners since the inner wall is invisible? I guess the easiest way is to use a polyline solid for those. A railing can't be supported by nailed or screwed 2x2's & meet the current building code, can it?-BB

    Brad,

Yes, Chief uses that wall type to do the deck, but it is an invisible railing wall.
To get things to display correctly, you need to define it as a normal wall (on it's own layer) and make that layer not display in 3D views.

It will then display as a single line in plan and will not display in 3D.

Thanks for the clarifier Glenn. Your method gives a real single line deck edge and what Chief "gives" us in the deck menu with the "Straight Deck Edge" tool, is NOTHING! It's a piddly nothing of an incomplete workaround and you don't even get a single line because its an invisible wall . This particular attempt by Chief is pathetic and shameless cheat and allowed the programers to take a day off!

Would be nice if they gave us the ability to control the line style and colors of the invisible walls, then you could easily make the inner line invisible instead of having to create a new layer and turn off the wall/rail display for 3d.
