    Andy,
    I was just playing with the method you had suggested of setting the angle of the baseline. In some respects this is easier, but still requires a little geometry and trig.

    I don't like that the shingles run with the ridge, they are not horizontal. Although in certain situations this could be the desired look

    The triangular filler plane eave height became unpredictable as Chief seems to base it on where it would have been if it was at a right angle to the baseline.
