Angry Problems reinstalling X4 after windows reinstall

My computer fried on me and I had to get a new one and transfer everything from my old drive. I still have the original download files, the downloader, and the product key. When I run the install, I get an error message that says

"Couldn't obtain current version number of product"

Not sure whats going on. I don't have SSA, so I have nothing in my digital locker.

Can anyone help? I've already been down long enough and I'm desperate to get Chief back up and running ASAP!

    Thanks

Had the same problem on March 4th. Contacted support and told to purchase CD. Without SSA this is now the only way to install on a new computer.

    Kevin:

Jellis has the download files so he should be able to install on a new PC
same as if he had the CD

I always buy the CD - just in case I ever need it

not sure if updates are available without having SSA ???

Thanks for your responses. Come to find out I was running the updater and not the installer. I will have to order a CD.

This is extremely aggravating considering the amount of money paid for this software. To pay $500/yr. just to have access to an install file is crazy. I see no reason why they cannot give all customers who dropped $2500 on their software access to the installation files .

Chances are, if you are having to re-install the software, you are having computer problems, which means your probably already crunched for time. Thanks Chief, for adding to the frustration.

So many good things I like about Chief, but this ticks me off.

If you purchase a new version or upgrade of Chief Architect through our web site, by default we will automatically add the backup DVD to your purchase. If you purchase Chief Architect by calling up our sales department, they will also encourage you to purchase the backup DVD at the same time you purchase the program. This backup DVD is completely optional though and you can choose not to purchase it.

If you choose not to purchase a backup DVD, then you are responsible for making a backup of your download files. If you somehow lose your download files or your backup DVD, we will still sell you a replacement one but it may take a while to get it to you.

Your other option is to keep your SSA service active. This will give you access to the most current version of the program, all of the downloadable content, all of the training videos, and free technical support. At $395 per year, I still think it is your best option.

I originally purchased Chief, thru the website, and every upgrade thereafter. Do I not get one?

    Perry:

I think Dermot means the initial purchase not updates

If not, then I have some refunds coming for X2 and X3 and X4 as I
had to pay for the DVD's .....

If we don't hear why over the weekend I'll call customer service on Monday
    to found what's going on

Apparently, I was not clear enough, so let's try again.

When you go to our web site to purchase a new copy of Chief or an upgrade for an older version of Chief, we will automatically select the backup DVD for you. If you don't want the backup DVD, you will have to manually unselect the option.

A backup DVD is not included for free with your SSA subscription. It's not even an option when you renew your SSA. If a new version is released while your SSA is active, you can manually purchase a backup DVD (assuming you want one) by going to the "add on products" page: http://www.chiefarchitect.com/products/addon/

If you purchased a backup DVD but did not receive it, you should contact our customer service for help. Or if you have any additonal questions, please feel free to call our sales department.

    Dermot:

I think the others are confusing upgrade with update (or initial purchase)

Each time I upgrade I have had to pay for the DVD
