In general I've not seen a lot of success using virtual machines. OpenGL acceleration is usually a problem, drivers for hardware locks, mice etc. are also often an issue. The time it takes to install to boot to a separate partition or a separate drive is probably less than installing the VM. Adding the hassle of trying to figure out how the VM operates and configure it work makes it even worse.
