yes, ver 9/9.5 will most likely not run under Vista or Win7

some have had success - but very few

you will need to buy an XP PC - they are very cheap these days
or buy win XP and install as a dual boot

or upgrade to X1 or later

for X1-X3 try Ebay or post in the "seeking services" section of this forum

X4 is available as an Upgrade on CA's website

I just did this today...so I know it works..

if you have a copy of XP you can install it inside of the VirtualBox virtual machine software, it has an extension that has usb support so you can get 9.5 w/hardware lock to run on your Vista or Win7 system....

    download VirtualBox:

    https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

and the extension pack for usb support...

after installing XP in the VM, install 9 and the hasp driver into the VM XP os....

Is the XP mode that I downloaded from the Microsoft site the same thing?

Which HASP4 driver works in this case?

    Thanks,

Windows 8, Chief 9.5, VirtualBox 4.3, this worked twice on 2 different installs of Chief, both with recognizing hardware lock but once in each. On each time it ran I was elated but then the next time running Chief it gave me the blue screen of death! Second install I sucessfully upgraded

Brand new system. Any suggestions? What should the memory settings be? Virtualbox said don't go too high on some programs? USB is selected to view the hardware lock.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Chief version 9.5 is such a dinosaur. If you don't want to upgrade then you might want to look at the latest version of HD Pro. It should have more capability and it's a lot less expensive. There may be a few things that HD Pro can't do that you can do with Chief 9.5 but there's also a lot more than it can.

Is 9.5 32bit? What Guest OS are you running? What Host resources are available? Are you trying to set compatibility within the Guest OS? This is really a question for the VirtualBox forums in setting an XP Guest on a Win8 Host.

    Hey Jon,

Yes, 32 bit. Guest host XP. Tons of memory for XP. Yes, seeing if I can make Chief more stable in the VirtualBox. Seems if I have it look for the hardware after it is trying to find it, it boots with more stability. Slow down the boot process so to speak. Will be experimenting more and more.

I would peg RAM at 4GB, Video Memory @ 256MB, at least 90GB HDD, and no more than 2 processor threads. Leave the Clipboard as unidirectional (there are issues), install Guest Additions, try USB defaults (don't mess with it at all).

Is this a clean install or are you using a pre-defined machine from Oracle?

The other issue is renaming virtual machines. Hardware locks peg to machine names, so depending on how many iterations, and unique names, you've gone through... well, there's that.

    Okay,
RAM at 4GB, Video Memory (on board) pegged at max which is 128MB, (I can also check 3D & 2D Acceleration, leaving them empty for now) Hard drive states: IDE won't let me change to a SATA or change the size so it's at 10GB Virtual, & Actual Size at 8.84GB (I can check it as Solid-State drive, which it is) and Processor set at 1 and I cannot alter this setting as it's grayed out.

As I am looking at this I noticed there is a wizard to set up a guest OS so I might have to delete and start over. ***** cause XP is really running pretty good but Chief is a coin toss booting. Here goes with these settings...

Run 1) Chief recieves Blue screen of Death, Microsoft states: Consider BIOS Upgrade. I had this before and did upgrade the BIOS. Now I am thinking maybe it's not the BIOS. Windows 8 performs extremely well.

Going to research dual boot. This way too many variables to control. At first I thought this way was easier.
