Well you said rec-room so i was thinking what you would want for that type of room. Yes commercial glue down will work. But ive never seen it used in a rec-room setting.

The homesote really makes the floor nice for carpet. When you walk on it. It feels like its on framed flooring. My Re-room is over 2000 sqft so having the tile area's help break up the room alsoYou can Find me on http://www.facebook.com/RickThomas100

Cork is a great solution. Used it a few times in basement workout rooms. Easy to maintain and warm to the touch. Renewable as well.Easy to install in either glue down or floating floor.

FLOR has some great colors an patterns. I have a friend who renovated his office with it a few years ago and it's held up really well. Cork is good too, also very durable.

Concrete !
Ping Pong is no fun unless the ball can bounce wildly around off the floor and walls after a slam, to the sound of hilarious laughter

The tile would be a great covering for a concrete floor, and with it being on a slab the tile wouldn't break. I have a hard time believing a ball not thrown with conciderable force would break either. In my fathers rec room, he did 18" tile with a big rug under his ping pong table. It worked out great, and will increase the quality of your home more than a laminate. Good luck!
