Window over range
Does anyone know if the IRC says anything about not allowing an operable window above a range?
Thanks for the help!

Louis:
You need to give a little more info before this question can be answered. Is this residential or commercial and what class occupancy?
A window above a range would not be considered accessible and therefore not eligible as a egress path. Also, if it was in a fire wall, it too would have to be fire rated.
Accessible windows are not required in a Kitchen for Residential Occupancy (exception 109.13.1). BUT some path of Egress is still required.Gerry

Hmm. I thought the IRC only applied to residential.
This is a single family residence. this is a kitchen. I did not ask for egress reasons. I asked if the heat and glass and window frame could be an issue. There are no firewalls.
Thanks for the help!

Lew, we have the 09 IRC on disk and I did a search for "cook" as in cook top, and "range". Nothing about horizontal clearance or required venalation unless you are using a broiler unit, ie: bbq type cooktop. Our local amendments adress the horizontal distance between a burner and wall, so you may also want to check your local ammendments.
Here is where it might get ya. You have to install the unit according to the manufaturers installation instructions (see attached).Charles Uyehara AIA

Which I acknowledged as my mistake. You may want to re-read the rest of his posts.
BUT I certainly will be more considerate about any help in the future.Gerry

BTW, I can't think of any reason this would be a problem. I've installed fireplaces that throw off far more heat adjacent to windows. Granted it was done to manufacturer specs, but a stove won't really throw off that much heat in that direction. Like others mentioned, check to see what the manufacturer suggests.

I think here in Australia the window has to be toughened glass.

While in Vegas one year I was going through some model homes and it was quite popular. It is a great look. If I remember correctly, the windows where set back 12" similar to a box window.

From what I gathered on google forums:
An electric cooktop would not be a problem as long as the manufacturer's recommendations are observed during installation.
A gas cooktop might present a danger from the flames reacting to a draft from an open window behind the stove.Francois

I have the same opinion as Francois. I remember that from years ago but have not tried to put one in that location since then.
