Will Trashed Items Import?
I'm getting ready to move my custom library items from X3 to X4.
I have "deleted" a huge number of X3 items. They are now in the X3 Trash Can.
Problem..
Last time I did a big library re-org/clean up, it took 5 hours to empty the trash. There's MORE this time.
Questions:
1. IS there anything I can do to speed up the delete process?
2. Is the delete any faster in X4 Trash?
3. If I do not empty the X3 Trash first, will those items be imported into the X4 Trash Bin?Last edited by kaynordby; 11-20-2011 at 06:02 AM.

Kay:
1. I don't think so
2. I think it is
3. I doubt it
probably best to discuss with tech support if you can wait till Monday

Hi Lew,
I will probably wait and talk with tech support. Just thought someone here might have been through something similar.
Thanks!

It seems odd that clearing the trash from the library browser would take a long time. Maybe it's un-subscribing them all? In X4 the trash.calib is in the same folder as user libraries. So I assume you can just delete that file if it is an issue and the program will make a new one upon restart. But, I don’t think symbols “subscribe” anymore. I cannot find the trash.calib for X3. When you install X4 you may want to manually restore your libraries.

I was not aware that an X3 delete means un-subscribing to the library items. That sounds like it would take a long while. The original download certainly took a while.
When I installed X4, I did not import my custom library. At 18GB, I knew it needed a serious clean up. I put tons of stuff in the Trash Bin, and the User Library file still says it is 18GB.
I think, to be on the safe side, I will "take out the trash" before import. I will just let it run overnight. Hopefully that will actually reduce the User Library file size.
So far the X4 library does seem to run faster. I hope that my custom library import does not bog it down.
I almost wish I could import my custom items into a secondary library.... but then, that might get confusing.

Kay:
In X3 the library "box" size can grow but not shrink
so even tho you empty the trash the "box" size remains the same
but there are less items within the "box'
you could try exporting your X3 user items via the library browser and then importing them into X4 via MENU - LIBRARY - IMPORT

Thanks Lew,
I forgot about that export library option. I will give it a go.

Yes, Lew is correct use export. It will still take a while but is likely your best option.

I think you guys are totally correct. Library by library export/import is the way to go.
Last night I let the computer run and deleted all the trash. As Lew said, it did not shrink the User Library size at all.
A library by library export will be a slow process, but I will be able to do it over time as need comes up. Might actually be better, as there are probably some of those libraries I will never import.

In X4 the trash is a million times faster to empty, then X3. They fixed it.

Sure seems that way. I have really enjoyed the speed so far.
If it works just as well after I import all my custom library stuff, that would be fantastic!
Has anyone else loaded up their X4 custom library? Did it slow things down?
I think the filtered searches will be a BIG help.

I know Chief says there is a limit to the lib. It will slow the program if you have a large one. Thats why they now have filters in the lib in X4. You can now filter out plants or whatever you want, so a much faster search and wont slow the program down.

I recently imported my (corrupted) X3 user library into X4, and I believe the Trash came in with it. So it's probably good that you deleted yours (even if the database thought they were "still there").
My imported library is still corrupted. I guess I was hoping that importing into X4 would somehow magically cure it. Oh well. I'm slowly searching for lost items (which are all still there in the database, they just don't show up in the browser). But I'm sure there are some I'll never find again because I don't remember them or what they were called.
Glad to hear you're making the switch to X4, Kay!Kathleen Moore

So sorry to hear that Dr.K! After this discussion, I think I will just open X3, make a plan file with the library items I need, then open the X3 plan with X4. It will be tedious, but that way I will only be adding things to my X4 library that I KNOW I will use.
