    Here are mine.

    Render: 2 sec
    Render + shadows: 24 sec
    Watercolor + line: 20sec
    Watercolor + line + shadows: 65 sec
    Raytrace: 36 sec

What are the standard raytrace settings?

The big differences in times seem to be the watercolor+line+shadows - mine seem ultra fast compared to others with times like 10 minutes! Are we all using the same technique?

I was thinking the same thing - Here's the catch. I've been doing all of these on a 30" monitor. I moved to my 20" monitor and the times got better. Even more.... If you reduce the size of the Chief Screen, it gets even faster.

    That means that none of these times are a comparison. Here are what mine are now with about a 10" (diagonal) size;

Water Color w/ Line Dwg. = 5.8 seconds
Additional for Final View w/Shadows = 19.5 seconds. That's down from 5 minutes 42.7 seconds on my 30 inch screen.

    Size matters

I was wondering if monitor size mattered. Glenn and Cliff, what size monitor are you guys working on?

    I have 2 x Samsung SyncMaster 204B (20").
    Resolution is 1600x1200.
I am thinking that the resolution is probably more important than the size.
When I did the initial tests I had Chief running on 1 screen only.

I just tried them in a smaller Chief window and all the times just about all halved (except the raytrace which renders at it's own size - makes sense, I guess.

    Size of the monitor matters.

The screen should not redraw when moving the mouse.

This may be caused by any number of things including mouse drivers. I never install the mouse driver that comes with the mouse unless I'm trying to debug a problem that they cause.

Actually, what usually matters most for both render and raytrace views is the resolution of the monitor (or the Chief window if you are not full screen). It's really all about the number of pixels needed.

Ok, there goes the bench mark!

    My is a 32" Acer 1920 x 1080

I wonder if there is a way to a common ground so we can really see what performs best?

    Dermot,

I've been considering getting a 40" LCD TV to use for Chief in my office. Would this be a bad idea?
Would it severely degrade speed of render views compared to a 20" monitor?
