Ok. Just installed the Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 card with 3 gig ram. The comparative numbers for rendering a shaded project are:
Quadro FX 4800 with 1.5 gig ram
Chief Architect (small 2 story beach house residence)27.18 seconds
Vectorworks (two story doctors office) 49.69 seconds
Geforce GTX 580 with 3 gig ram
Chief Architect (small 2 story beach house residence) 15.12 seconds
Vectorworks (two story doctors office) 48.68 seconds
Not the huge performcance jump in Chief I was hoping for, but still better. I wasn't surprised it didn't help with Vectorworks. I wasn't expecting it ot help. But at least it didn't slow it down, since I still use VW occaisionally.
Now to sell the Quadro and get some money back. Ebay has them for $700 to $1050. That will be nice to offset the $540 I spent on the new Geforce.Edward Koenig - R.A.

Ed,
Thanks for posting the numbers!
Can you post the plan with the saved camera you used so we can all compare. To be clear, you are doing a render camera?
I think your results increase proportionately.

Here are the images, attached. I zipped the file but it's too large for the forum upload. I created a Drop Box location,
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19582469/ALI...0FINAL%201.zip
Post a message if the file location doesn't work. And please post your numbers with video card configuration.Edward Koenig - R.A.

Ed;
Using your exact camera view, this is what I get;
Render = 1-2 seconds
Render w/shadows = 11 seconds
Ray Trace 640x480 = 18.5 seconds
Line Drawing technique = 6 seconds

Oh I seriously see a computer upgrade in my future. Pheonixconstruction and Gary Dioski's numbers are amazing. I thought my 32 gig and dual Xeons would still be a powerhouse for Chief. I guess I was really wrong. Raytraced in 18 seconds? Really? WOW.
Thanks for the feedback. Anyone else?Edward Koenig - R.A.

Raytraced in 18 seconds?
Really ???
is this kind of speed necessary ???
I didn't say wanted - I said necessary
I would be satisfied with a few minutes (maybe 5 min)
gives me time to make a pit stop or surf the web
or browse chieftalk etc
good time for a mental break
If I can get great speed on a decent PC I doubt if I would spend
serious $$$ to upgrade to get SUPER fast times ....
If I can fire up a raytrace at night and have it ready in the morning
that would be good also
unless I had to re-do it
what speeds are acceptable to the average chiefer ???
I can see where Pat and Kathleen and Kay etc would want SUPER fast

George has always had the best machine around here, at least as far back as I'm aware of. He has always had screamers.
Lew ,we just don't want off time to sit and wait for RT's. we sometimes have to do "the crappy RT's" just to get it done.Perry

A question on your Ratyrace times. Are using a stop watch from the time you press Ratrace, or are you using the time that it shows you at the top of the screen?
On the old Quadro FX 4800 card, for the default Raytrace at 640 x 480, I get 29 seconds on the top of the secreen but my stop watch gives me 43 seconds because I am including the processing surfaces and export time. Are you including those also in your reported times?Edward Koenig - R.A.
