Buy the latest codes on CD
My advise is to buy the latest 2012 IRC on CD and use it as a look-up tool. The search feature is great and it is easy to find things that you need. There are not that many changes from the 2009 codes and you will not have to replace it for another 3 or more years.

Some of the other guys mentioned this a bit, but make sure what codes are applicable where you are building. While most places I believe have implemented the IRC, this isn't always the case. Even when they have chosen to use the IRC, they don't always use the most recent versions. Local governments adopt whichever codes they like when they like, and even then, they often make substantial amendments so check with the local authorities.

Oh ya, one more thing. It also depends on what type of code book you're talking about. Often times an area will adopt one code for structural, another for mechanical, another for plumbing, another for energy and so on.

An even if your community adopts a specific code, they may strike or add sections.
The IRC has been adopted my Maine as the statewide building code but the legislation strikes the clause requiring residential sprinklers. Some communities have individually adopted the sprinkler clause.
